Frequently Asked Questions

general information…

  • The Stomp is a free-ranging annual summer celebration of the talent and creativity hiding behind the garden gates of the Sunnyland Neighborhood. Stomp Stops are located at homes and businesses and feature games, art, activities, music and more.

  • There are Stomp Stops at homes and businesses throughout the Sunnyland Neighborhood, which is bounded by Cornwall Ave. and I-5 (east-west) and Sunset Dr. and Ohio St. (north-south). The Stomp map will tell you where, exactly, to find the fun!

  • The Stomp is typically held on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of July. Once we set the date, usually by March, we will update our website and social media channels.

  • Email us! sunnylandstomp@gmail.com We are very responsive to email and we will get back to you promptly. We don’t respond to messages or inquiries on Facebook or Instagram, and sometimes we miss the carrier pigeons or messages in a bottle, so it’s best to just stick with good old-fashioned email.

  • Maybe! We try to distribute portable bathrooms and trash cans throughout the neighborhood so Stomp attendees don’t have to travel far to use the facilities. We promise not to put one in your actual front yard, but one may appear near your house on the city right-of-way between the sidewalk and the street.

  • The Stomp Team is organized by a small group of neighbors who are passionate about planning a celebration to build community and showcase the creativity of their neighborhood. After founding and running the Stomp for seven years, Alice Clark handed it off to a new team in 2016. Although The Stomp Team has evolved over the years, every organizer has lived or worked in Sunnyland and has been deeply committed to volunteering their time to organize a fun, authentic, and successful summer event. Are you interested in lending your skills to The Stomp? Shoot us an email to sunnylandstomp@gmail.com and introduce yourself!

  • The Sunnyland Stomp is a registered Washington State nonprofit corporation.

  • The Chicken Race is a semi-annual shenanigan-filled event that pops up in a Sunnyland park to provide entertainment and community connection for our many poultry-loving neighbors. The first Chicken Race happened in the 3rd or 4th year of the Stomp in Sunnyland Park, and continued in that location until 2015. When new organizers took over the event in 2016, the Chicken Race took a brief hiatus, but it made a triumphant return in 2017 and had a good run in a new location in Memorial Park until the Stomp itself took a pause during the pandemic. The current organizers of the Stomp are doing their best to overcome bureaucratic obstacles in order to bring back the Chicken Race in 2024.

ATTENDING THE STOMP…

  • Of course! We’re looking forward to seeing you!

  • The Stomp is best enjoyed as a pedestrian or a cyclist...but we get that sometimes driving is the best option for folks. You can find parking on any of the residential streets in the neighborhood - please be respectful of organizations and businesses by not using their parking lots.

  • The Stomp is free to attend! Many of the Stomp Stops sell artwork and there are lots of delicious eats and drinks at restaurants and food trucks on the day of the event, so you may still want to bring your wallet.

  • The Stomp itself runs from 3-8pm.

  • Dogs are welcome on the sidewalks and parks of the Sunnyland Neighborhood, but may not be welcome inside people’s homes or businesses, so plan accordingly.

  • It sure is! Many Stomp Stops have activities and art specifically geared toward younger people while others are for all-comers. Check the descriptions on the map if you want to create a Stomp experience tailored specifically for young ‘uns.

  • Each year we locate the portable restrooms near clusters of Stomp Stops. Check the map to find the restroom closest to you! If you are a patron of a business in the neighborhood, you’re also welcome to use their restrooms.

  • At this time, T-shirts and other Stomp swag are available exclusively as a special thank-you for hosts and sponsors since they are the folks who make the Stomp possible each year.

  • The beauty of the Sunnyland Stomp is that it grows and evolves right alongside Sunnyland itself. When the Stomp was founded, Sunnyland was a pretty quiet, mostly residential neighborhood, and the Stomp was a much more hyper-local event than it is nowadays. Each year, the Stomp reflects what hosts are most excited about showcasing - the Stomp does not steer or curate Stomp Stops, we simply provide a platform for neighbors to share their creativity in whatever way their hearts desire.

  • Email the organizers at sunnylandstomp@gmail.com and we will do our best to help you track it down. If you can remember where you were, you can also reach out directly to the Stomp Stop of business where you think you might have left it. Since the Stomp happens in so many different locations, we don’t have a ‘lost and found’ like many other festivals and fairs.

HOSTING A STOMP STOP…

  • Host registration typically opens in April and is available until the beginning of June. Follow the Sunnyland Stomp on Facebook and Instagram, or join our host email list, for the most up-to-date information. Once registration opens, you can sign up to host your own Stomp Stop on the ‘Host’ page.

  • If you want to feature your art/music/general awesomeness at the Stomp, the best way is to find a neighborhood resident to partner up with.

  • You will receive a confirmation email from the organizers once we have received your signup. Online signups are required!

  • Packaged food that does not require temperature control for safety, such as chips, crackers, candy, nuts or granola bars.

Packaged food that is not individually wrapped may be served in individual disposable containers such as napkins or paper cups. No one may serve themselves from a common bag or bowl.

Fruit that has a peel and does not need washing, such as oranges or bananas.

Hot beverages that are not potentially hazardous such as coffee, tea or cider, or cold, store-bought bottled drinks poured into paper cups.

Store-bought, individually wrapped ice cream bars or popsicles.

  • If you are a food truck that has a current permit in good standing with the Whatcom County Health Department, there are two ways you can participate:

    1) You can partner up with an existing Stomp Stop and list your food truck in their map description, which means you can share the signup fee with the Stop host.

    2) You can pay $50 to be listed on the map as a standalone Stomp Stop and we will work with you to choose a good location to park.

  • It is not legal to serve alcohol to the public without a liquor license. Bars, breweries, and restaurants with liquor licenses are, of course, welcome to serve alcohol!

  • City of Bellingham quiet hours begin at 10pm. Please be a good neighbor and plan to end any amplified music or other loud activities by or before 10pm.

  • Stop hosts will be able to pick up their maps and posters the week prior to the Stomp. We will contact hosts directly with more details on pickup time and location closer to the event.

  • Do it! As long as you're being respectful about turning down the loudness by or before 10pm, we're not here to tell you when to stop Stomping!

SPONSORING THE STOMP…

  • Sponsor registration typically opens in April and is available until the end of May. Follow the Sunnyland Stomp on Facebook and Instagram, or join our sponsor email list, for the most up-to-date information. Once registration opens, you can sign up to sponsor the Stomp on our ‘Sponsor’ page.

  • There are several levels of sponsorship with perks including promotion on social media, the Stomp website, event swag, complimentary t-shirts, and more. See the Sponsor sign up form for the specific levels and perks.

  • Funds from sponsors pay for printing costs, design and production of event swag, park permits, stipend for poster art, stipends for event organizers, web hosting, and other administrative expenses. When budget allows, the Stomp has also made donations to causes that are actively working to make Sunnyland a better place. Each year the goal is to raise just enough money to cover event expenses for that year, and set aside a little bit of seed money for the next year’s event.

  • When the Stomp opens for business each spring, we post sponsorship information on our social media accounts and we also send notifications directly to our list of past sponsors. We also try to reach out directly to new businesses that have opened in Sunnyland since the last Stomp to welcome them to the neighborhood and introduce them to the event. Although the vast majority of sponsorship dollars are generated from neighborhood businesses, the Stomp accepts sponsorship from any local business or individual who loves the Stomp and wants to support the event.
